April 7 to June 30
The Book of Mormon Translation Challenge (#BOMTC) invites people to read the entire Book of Mormon during the same 85-day period that it took Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery to translate it (April 7-June 30, 1829). Do you have what it takes to read it in that amount of time?
Choose Your Challenge
There are three basic study schedules that I have set up to help people to study the Book of Mormon in 85 days:
- 1 Nephi 1 to Moroni 10. This study schedule follows the simple model of sequential scripture study by starting at the beginning of the Book of Mormon (1 Nephi 1) and continuing on to the end (Moroni 10). CLICK HERE
- Mosiah 1 to Words of Mormon. This study schedule begins with Mosiah 1 and ends with Words of Mormon. This model begins where the Prophet Joseph Smith and his scribe, Oliver Cowdery, started the translation process on April 7, 1829. CLICK HERE
- Day-by-day with Joseph Smith. This study schedule follows the best-researched-daily-schedule that we have for the Prophet Joseph Smith as he and Oliver Cowdery worked on the translation of the Book of Mormon from April 7-June 30. This can be a tricky schedule to follow because the daily study schedule is not evenly distributed and because there are some days when Joseph and Oliver were not able to work on the translation, so on some days there is nothing to read. However, if you are willing to be flexible and creative, this can be a great option for the #BOMTC. CLICK HERE
“Seek this Jesus” (Ether 12:41)
Regardless of which schedule you choose to follow, I have a personal invitation for you!
President Russell M. Nelson has taught the following:
“Study of the Book of Mormon is most rewarding when one focuses on its primary purpose—to testify of Jesus Christ. By comparison, all other issues are incidental. When you read the Book of Mormon, concentrate on the principal figure in the book—from its first chapter to the last—the Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God.” (“A Testimony of the Book of Mormon,” Ensign, Nov. 1999. Emphasis added.)
“As you read [the Book of Mormon], I would encourage you to mark each verse that speaks of or refers to the Savior. Then, be intentional about talking of Christ, rejoicing in Christ, and preaching of Christ with your families and friends. You and they will be drawn closer to the Savior through this process. And changes, even miracles, will begin to happen.” (“Sisters’ Participation in the Gathering of Israel,” Ensign, Nov. 2018. Emphasis added.)
I urge you to accept President Nelson’s invitation and carefully focus on and mark the different titles for Jesus Christ in the Book of Mormon. I am calling this the “SEEK THIS JESUS” challenge, and I invite you to join me on this journey! (Click here to learn more.)

A great challenge, but I don’t like reading it fast. I like to really study and ponder it and that takes me a lot of time!

I know what you mean. I find different things each time I read it, and when I read it different ways. If you try it, I think you will like it, and still get a lot out of it. The important thing is to JUST KEEP READING 🙂

The first time I read the Book of Mormon all the way through, the schedule was called “The 40 Day Feast”. By reading it in 40 days, the continuity of the story and relationships were much more clear than when you read a few verses a day.
I wouldn’t recommend reading it that way very often, but it was a good way for me reading it the first time about 25 years ago.
At that time I belonged to an email group called “Sister Share” and I invited them to read with me, so that group became a subgroup of SS. Each day we discussed what we had read.
Sure, some dropped out and didn’t complete the challenge, but for those who did, I created a certificate and sent to them.
I often think of those sisters and wonder if they are reading with me now.

Hi, Cody. Congratulations on reading the Book of Mormon once, and congratulations for taking the challenge to read it again. It is a fairly demanding schedule to follow, but if you do it you won’t regret a minute of it! There is a way to share the calendar. I will check it out and let you know! Check back with me tomorrow if you don’t hear back from me today 🙂

I’m excited and ready! I’ve already started myself, in a way. In our last stake conference, the mission president challenged everybody to get a copy of and read the Book of Mormon, relying on the Spirit to tell us what to mark. When we’re done, to rely on the Spirit to tell us who the Book is for. The stuff I’m underlining so far appears to be about gratitude and witnessing. Interesting.

i can’t think of a better way to begin this BOMTC than to be reading part of King Benjamin’s address. I love as well how you expounded on the significance of our own personal tents in relation to our service and commitment to the Lord. I loved all the Prophet/Apostle quotes, President Eyring’s being one of my favourites! Focusing on service has helped me to reexamine my own heart as I give service, reflecting and assessing to ensure I do so with no “selfish desires”.

I’ve gone back over Mosiah 5 after reading your post re: the reference to the word name. Thank you as well for the short story related to Caesar – very interesting stuff! I’ve had to ponder abit more on Mosiah 5;7 about Christ “spiritually begotten you” and what that means to me personally. Not sure I completely understand but I’m trying!

I just love leaning about the “adoption” process that occurs as we are baptized and take His “name” upon us–Jesus becomes our Spiritual Father. We renew that spiritual adoption as we continually partake of the sacrament and recommit to “take His name” upon us. We have our Heavenly Parents, our earthly parents, and our Spiritual Father, Jesus Christ, who allows us to be “born again” and covers us with His name. Every ordinance is done in His “name”. All inheritance will come through His “name”. We owe everything to that name!
